Cloisonne

Previous ◁ | ▷ Next

Cloisonne is a decorative art in which enamel (powdered glass) is fired onto a metal base usually over a grid of fine wires. It is practised in many parts of the world but most commonly in China, Japan and Russia.

In the oriental examples, the enamel is polished down level with the wire grid to make a smooth surface. The pieces here are probably Chinese but they are almost never marked. Cloisonne is still being produced in China in large quantities and it is difficult to tell old pieces from new ones. I believe these pieces to be at least 50 years old.

Cloisonne is fairly easily damaged. Any dint will shatter the fused glass surface.
