Thomas Erskine's 'Essay on Faith' - 1822 First Edition

Previous ◁ | ▷ Next

Thomas Erskine was an influential Scottish lay theologian of the early 1800s. He emphasized the loving side of God's nature and was critical of Scottish Calvinism of his time.

An indication of his importance is that this book is still in print almost 200 years later, with several new editions within the last few years.

This volume is where it all started in 1822.

It has gray brown boards that look like they've been handled a lot - somewhat soiled with bumped and worn corners and edges. Parts of the title label on the spline are still readable.

Inside, it is in remarkably good condition for a book this old. The pages, which are rough paper and untrimmed, are only slightly yellowed. There is minor foxing on the end papers but none in the text. This is all hand printed and bound. The hinges are weak but still well attached.
