Native Black Pottery Turtle

An unusual Black Pottery turtle done in the traditions and techniques of the Southwest Pueblo Indians and natives around Oaxaca, Mexico. Such pieces are frequently attributed to Dona Rosa of Oaxaca but many others did similar work and this is not signed.

The carapace (shell) is pierced and has numerous markings typical of native work. The finish is finely burnished to a reflective shine.

The base has chipping that undercuts the inner rim. It is invisible when the top is on and not obvious even when the top is off. Apart from that it is in excellent condition.

This could be used as an incense burner or a pot pourri or purely decorative.

Length is about 5", width about 3" and height abou 2 1/4".
