You can find black velvet souvenir cushions from all over the world with sparkly painted pictures on them. But you are unlikely to find one from a more out-of-the-way place as this. Moose Factory is on an island in the mouth of the Moose River at the Southern end of the James Bay in the hinterland of Northern Ontario (Canada). It cannot be reached by road but Moosonee which is on the mainland is the northern terminus of the Ontario Northland Railway.
Moose Factory’s claim to fame is as a Hudson’s Bay Company fort established in 1673 and was the first English speaking settlement in what is now Ontario, more than a century before the American Revolution and the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists.
This cushion cover features an Indian in a Birchbark canoe and a totem pole (which would be very out-of-place in Ontario). This was likely from the 1960s or possibly even the ’50s.
It is approx 17″ square (not including the fringe). the fringe has a few spots where it has unraveled (see pictures) but the top and the image are in excellent condition. The stuffing has been removed so that it can be shipped at a reasonable cost. The last picture shows it with the stuffing still in it.

Re: shipping. I am now using an alternative carrier for most of my shipments and most are now tracked, insured and faster. However, this carrier does not have a shipping calculator that integrates with Etsy so shipping calculations are still from Canada Post. Timeframes will generally be faster and the rates will usually be less than quoted. As a result I am making partial refunds on about half of my shipments – on bulky items to the USA, refunds can be in the double digits. If you want an accurate quote in advance please email me with your full address, postal code & country.
All items are packed carefully and securely. I use recycled materials wherever possible.
I will combine shipping on multiple purchases whenever appropriate in order to save you money.
