Point-au-Baril is a summer resort area onj Georgian Bay in central Ontario, Canada. From the early 1900s until the 1940s, it was best known as the launch point to the rustic but luxurious Ojibway Hotel which was located on a nearby island. This Paper Mache box was likely purchased by a visitor in the 1920s or 30s. The building is now owned by a local cottagers’ association and operates as a community hub.

Although this box is a souvenir of ‘backwoods’ Canada, it has an incongruous Japanese theme picture of Mt Fuji on it. The picture is executed (in Japan presumably) in mixed wood marquetry veneers (there are about 10 different veneers). The only deference to Point-au-Baril is the bark veneer around the edges.

The box has diameter of 5.25″ and is about 2″ high. There is some chipping of the bark around the edges but everything else is in good condition. The marquetry is very well executed and is in very good condition although it may have faded over the years.
