Book of Historic American Engravings “Adventures of America 1857-1900- A Pictorial Record from Harper’s Weekly”

$15.95

In the 1800s before photography got established, publications had to use engravings to illustrate their stories. Artists of the day, including Thomas Nast, Winslow Homer and Frederick Remington were dispatched to provide the illustrations and a small army of engravers would cut the wood blocks or metal plates – all within the tight deadlines of a weekly news publication. Harper’s Weekly started before the Civil War and the 250 pages of this book (approx – the pages aren’t numbered) illustrate the period up to 1900 in a way that other books cannot. Each engraving is accompanied by an extensive caption explaining the event and its context.

This was published in 1938 and I believe this was the first and only edition.Every page has at least one engraving, many have 2 or even more. The book is 12.25″ x 9.25″. There is no writing in the book, no turned or torn pages and the binding is firm. There is minor water staining along the front edge of the pages but this doesn’t extend into the pages more than 1/8′. The paper label on the spine is torn.

Re shipping. When you check out you will be quoted a price for the shipping based on your address and the estimated physical size and weight of the package.

All items destined to any country outside of Canada (including USA) will have tariffs applied (percentage of the item’s value depending on the country of origin) and brokerage fees (approx $2).

Items destined to the USA require a label or mark stating the country of origin – in many cases vintage items aren’t marked and I may have to physically attach such a label myself.

All items are packed carefully and securely. I use recycled materials wherever possible. Most shipments are insured.
